A few years ago I realized that my fuse had become short. And it was mostly with the people who I cared about the most, my son and hubby. They were just around me ALL THE TIME! My son especially. And let’s be real, he was probably in one of those phases of childhood that are tough on moms. But regardless, I knew that I wasn’t bringing my best self to the table, and I didn’t like it. I knew I needed to make some changes so that I would have the energy to deal with his energy! While there were a lot of things I knew I could improve on, I decided to do one at a time. I can’t remember why I decided to start with my sleep habits, but it ended up being a great choice. I had always joked that I probably wouldn’t really catch up on my sleep until my son was in college, but that was just an excuse. I decided that in order to be able to get up to run in the morning and still get in my 8 hours, I had to be asleep by a certain time. And once I chose that time, I backed that up a bit and set a time for me to start getting ready for bed. And I made the decision that while I did want my phone by me at night, I wouldn’t do any scrolling before bed. I chose a book that I had read many times (The Hobbit) and made it my bedtime read. And I decided that even on weekends, with few exceptions, I would wake up and go to bed with an hour of my chosen weekday bedtimes and wake-up times.
It wasn’t long before my body got into the rhythm and it took less and less time to fall asleep. Now a few years later, I’ve also learned that the winter months deserve more sleep, either at night or with naps. And while my quality of sleep isn’t always great, I still benefit from the habits I started back then. In my private health coaching practice, I help busy Christian moms adopt simple health habits like setting bedtime routines so they can love the body God gave them and have the energy to be All In for their families. If that sounds like you, use the link on this page to request my complimentary Loving the Body God Gave Me Workbook. This workbook will walk you through exploring some of what scripture says on this topic. By the end you will have developed a simple first step towards caring for your body so that you can best care for the people who mean the most to you.
